Changing Perspectives – The Plot Twist

The Southwest Twin Drive-In, originally known as the 61 Drive-In, was established in 1956 as Memphis’ second-ever drive-in movie theatre. Purchased by Malco Theatres in 1965 and soon after expanded to include a second screen; the Southwest Twin grew to welcome a capacity of 600 cars. In 2001, the Southwest Twin closed its doors, and over time, the blighted property became a source of concern for neighboring communities.

Our role is to focus the interest in the property into a series of activations—planned by neighbors, stakeholders, groups, organizations, and government—to demonstrate the possibilities for this site’s future, which can serve as a catalyst for positive change in the community.

Together, we see an opportunity to bring new life, activity, vitality, and further investment into the neighborhood.
